In the footsteps of Collodi's writing, Lies of P centers itself around a manufactured boy of ambiguous humanity. P as a silent protagonist, a miracle willed into the world by Geppetto, is enigmatic enough to keep the game interesting even aside from the constantly unfurling mysteries of Krat. The impetus behind each objective is compelling, and the stakes are continuously raised. Lies of P's narrative is almost singularly enthralling, yet occasionally illusion-breaking. Even further, the Legion Arm provides a chosen combat utility à la Sekiro's Shinobi Prosthetics, including a flamethrower and one which distributes pools of acid. Similarly, most weapons can be separated from their handles, each half affecting either damage or scaling, and dictating what two Fable Arts (special attacks or toggle-able buffs) can be used. Outfits affect aesthetic only, but different puppet components provide protection and resistances. The modular nature of building both P himself and his weaponry exemplifies the type of take on the soulslike formula that makes Lies of P so endearing. Lies of P's gameplay mechanics, from control scheme to progressing through bonfire-like checkpoints known as Stargazers, are comfortably familiar, but its moment-to-moment gameplay still carries its own identity.

Crates and other bits of set dressing splinter when rolled through levels are gained by trading an experience point/currency hybrid called Ergo to a cryptic woman in Hotel Krat, Lies of P's hub area large doors are opened with laborious gravitas.
